Oral Hygiene

No one likes a dirty mouth

Even if you are the most polite, well-spoken person in the world, if you don’t maintain good oral hygiene, you might be giving an impression more like a sailor (or maybe even a pirate) than a saint. Make sure you are putting your best face forward with a solid oral home care routine and regular visits to your Fort Lauderdale dentist, Dr. Rizvi at My Dentist for Life.

It takes two

Think of your oral health as a marriage. While things may run smoothly for a long time without any speed bumps, if the relationship is not an equal partnership, and sufficient effort is not put in by both parties, eventually, it will fail. Putting in all the effort yourself and asking nothing of your partner, or expecting your partner to fix everything is just not reasonable. Both parties must work equally hard as a team to keep things running smoothly – the same goes for your oral hygiene, except in this case, your partner is Dr. Rizvi.

Your job

Your daily hygiene routine, and your lifestyle and diet play a huge role in your oral health. The primary cause of most oral health problems – tooth loss, oral infection, gum disease – is tooth decay, which is caused by sugar and food particles that are allowed to remain on teeth and turn into acid that breaks down tooth enamel. Minimizing sugar and acidity in your diet is ideal, but we realize that these things are hard to avoid sometimes.

That’s why it is so important that you maintain a strict oral hygiene routine at home on a daily basis. We recommend brushing at least twice per day – once after breakfast, and once before bed. Brushing after each meal is ideal, but if this is not an option, rinsing with water and/or chewing gum containing xylitol after eating or drinking something sugary will help minimize acidity in your mouth and keep tooth decay at bay. Brushing is great at keeping the exposed surfaces of the teeth clean, but only flossing will remove particles stuck between teeth. We recommend flossing once per day, right before your nightly brushing.
