Deep cleaning versus routine cleaning, what's the difference?
The deep cleaning, and in our office, we call it periodontal therapy, is a treatment of the infection of the gums and the bone in which there's been a buildup of plaque and tartar that's causing a lot of inflammation, bleeding gums, and can cause abscesses. Versus a regular cleaning, which is a healthy mouth cleaning, that mainly is cleaning of stains and plaque and tartar above the gums.
Why is dental periodontal therapy necessary?
Dental periodontal therapy is necessary, or in other words, a deep cleaning, because we want to make sure that you keep your teeth for the rest of your life. The end result of no treatment for this infection is tooth loss, and people end up needing dentures, which is probably one of the worst things that a person can get.
How long can I go without a dental cleaning?
That varies from person to person. Dental cleaning is generally recommended anywhere between every three, every four, or every six months, depending on the person, their medical history, and their dental history.
What does the hygienist do at a cleaning appointment?
The hygienist would review your medical and dental history, take your blood pressure, check the depths of your pockets, take x-rays if necessary, go over some home care, and then actually do the cleaning itself.
Why do my teeth feel weird after cleaning?

In order to maintain the health of your mouth, it's very important to focus on your home care, which includes brushing twice a day for two minutes, flossing once a day with regular string floss, and rinsing with a mouth rinse. Make sure the pH of the mouth rinse is high and that it's alcohol-free.
